Popular Aluminum Overhead Line Products

AAC–ASTM-B All Aluminium Conductor

AAC (All Aluminum Conductor)** is made of high-purity aluminum (at least 99.7%), which has the advantages of light weight, good electrical conductivity, and strong corrosion resistance, but has low strength and is suitable for short-distance transmission lines and cities distribution network.

AAAC-ASTM-B All Aluminium Alloy Conductor

AAAC (Aluminum Alloy Conductor)** is made of aluminum alloy and has higher strength than pure aluminum (AAC). It has a good balance of strength, weight, conductivity and corrosion resistance, and is suitable for medium-distance transmission lines and rural power grid construction.

ACSR-ASTM-B Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced

ACSR (Steel Core Aluminum Alloy Stranded Wire)** is composed of steel core and aluminum alloy stranded wire. It has the highest strength and is suitable for special environments such as long-distance transmission lines, high-voltage transmission lines and crossing rivers.

ACAR-ASTM-B Aluminum Conductor, Alloy Reinforced

ACAR conductor is formed by wrapping strands of high purity aluminum (aluminum 1350) on high strength Aluminum-Magnesium-Silicon alloy (6201 aluminum alloy) core. ACAR has better electrical as well as mechanical properties than equivalent ACSR conductors. ACAR conductors may be used in overhead transmission as well as distribution lines.

When selecting a conductor type, factors such as line length, voltage level, environmental conditions, and cost should be considered.Quick Quote

  • AAC: Lightweight, economical, used for short distances.
  • AAAC: Good strength, light weight, suitable for medium distance routes.
  • ACSR: Strongest, used for long distance and high voltage lines.
  • ACAR: Balanced Strength & Weight, Ideal for Long Spans with Moderate Tension.

Characteristics of Overhead Line Aluminium Conductors

Good tensile strength and creep resistance: medium-strength aluminum alloy wires usually have high tensile strength and creep resistance, which can withstand long-term stable working loads and prolong the service life of the wires.

Excellent resistance and voltage drop characteristics: intermediate strength aluminium alloy wires has low resistance and voltage drop, which can reduce energy loss and power loss, and improve the efficiency of power transmission.

Superior strength: compared with ordinary aluminum conductors, Intermediate strength aluminium alloy wires used on overhead stranded wires have higher specific strength and can withstand greater tension and loads. This makes it even better at transporting long distances and spanning large support structures.

Lightweight: compared with copper wires, medium-strength aluminum alloy wires are lighter in weight, which makes it more convenient for suspended installation or long-distance transmission. In addition, the lighter weight reduces installation and maintenance costs.

Strong adaptability: intermediate strength aluminium alloy wires is suitable for different types of overhead lines, including transmission lines, distribution lines and branch lines. It can be used in different application scenarios, such as urban, rural, industrial areas, etc.Quick Quote

Good thermal conductivity: the medium-strength aluminum alloy wire has high thermal conductivity, which can effectively dissipate heat. This is very important for the performance and safety of power transmission lines and power equipment.

Good electrical conductivity: the Intermediate strength aluminium alloy wires used on the overhead stranded wire has good electrical conductivity and can effectively transmit power. Although it has slightly lower electrical conductivity than copper, medium-strength aluminum alloy wire is still a cost-effective choice.

Good anti-wind vibration performance: medium-strength aluminum alloy wires usually have good anti-wind vibration performance when used on overhead stranded wires, which can reduce wire vibration and swing caused by wind blowing, and improve the stability and reliability of the line.

Aluminum vs. Copper in Overhead Power Cables

Copeer and aluminum are two common types of electricity conductors in electrical cables. Power transmission lines span for hundreds of meters between the towers, so overhead cables have to be cost-efficient. Copper wires can be used in overhead wires to a satisfactory outcome. However, aluminum power cables are two times lighter compared to their copper counterparts and six times cheaper while maintaining the same resistance rate.

These properties make aluminum the best material for high-voltage transmission lines on the market, as overhead power cable has to be light and flexible in addition to being durable. Aluminum is a malleable material that is less prompt to compression stress compared to copper. This is a clear benefit as overhead cables are subjected to such stress. Utility companies have used aluminum since the beginning of the 20th century.

Today, about 13 percent of the aluminum produced is utilized in the energy sector. Aluminum wires have the perfect strength to weight ratio and are cost-efficient because they are not labor-intensive and save construction time.
