Fuel Tanks: Wing fuel tanks are part of the wing structure, made from the same material as the wing itself, with the seams sealed using oil-resistant sealants. Due to the advantages of aluminum alloy, such as lightweight, high strength, ease of forming, and ease of welding, it is widely used in fuel tank structures.

Space Boosters: 2219 aluminum was chosen because of its lightweight properties and ability to withstand the pressure generated during space launches and operations. It has been used in the Apollo spacecraft, Skylab, the Space Shuttle, and the International Space Station.

Why is 2219 aluminum plate clad?

The surface of 2219 aluminum plate is clad (also referred to as a composite or aluminum cladding) primarily to improve its corrosion resistance. While 2219 aluminum alloy has excellent high-temperature strength and weldability, its corrosion resistance is relatively poor, especially in humid or corrosive environments where it is prone to corrosion.

The cladding is a layer of pure aluminum or highly corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy that is applied to the surface of the 2219 aluminum plate through a composite process. Pure aluminum or corrosion-resistant alloys have better resistance to oxidation, thus providing protection for the 2219 aluminum substrate in corrosive environments. Even if the cladding is slightly scratched, the oxide layer formed on the aluminum can effectively prevent further corrosion.

Machinability recommendations for 2219 aluminum plate

  • This alloy is not suitable for hot working.
  • It is best suited for cold working and can be machined in the annealed condition.
  • It is recommended to use oil-based lubricants in all machining operations.
  • Hot working and welding can adversely affect the corrosion resistance of this alloy.
  • It can be machined using conventional methods such as drilling, milling, and turning.

Welding recommendations for 2219 aluminum plate

  • Welding can affect the corrosion resistance of 2219 aluminum rods. Therefore, heat treatment should be performed after welding to restore corrosion resistance.
  • Resistance welding and inert gas welding should be used with caution, as strain cracking may occur during cooling.
  • It is recommended to use 2219 aluminum as the welding filler material for 2219 aluminum rods.

  • Apply interleaving paper or film to protect the aluminum sheet.
  • Wrap with plastic or kraft paper (ensuring each package has a moisture-absorbing desiccant).
