Tempers of 2024 Aluminum

2024 O (Annealed)

Annealed and softened, exhibiting the highest plasticity and formability, used for initial processing stages such as deep drawing and bending, facilitating subsequent heat treatment.

2024 T3 (Solution Heat Treated - Cold Worked - Naturally Aged)

One of the most commonly used tempers, with medium-high strength and moderate ductility, suitable for high-strength applications requiring some formability, such as aircraft skins, structural components, and automotive parts.

2024 T351 (Solution Heat Treated - Stress Relieved by Stretching - Naturally Aged)

Achieves a strength of around 470 MPa and possesses excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking, commonly used for critical load-bearing structural components.

2024 T4 (Solution Heat Treated - Naturally Aged)

Offers good ductility and machinability, but with slightly lower strength than T3, suitable for applications requiring subsequent processing or on-site aging.

2024 T42 (Solution Heat Treated - Naturally Aged at Customer Site)

Maintains a semi-hard state after leaving the factory, facilitating long-distance transportation and reprocessing, and is naturally aged by the customer at the usage site to a stable state.

2024 T6 (Solution Heat Treated - Artificially Aged)

Achieves peak strength (approximately 470–500 MPa) through high-temperature artificial aging, suitable for industrial and structural parts subjected to high static loads and fatigue resistance requirements.

2024 T62 (Solution Heat Treated - Artificially Aged at Customer Site)

Maintains a not fully aged state after leaving the factory, allowing customers to perform artificial aging to flexibly control final performance and delivery time.

2024 T8 (Solution Heat Treated - Cold Worked - Artificially Aged)

Combines cold work strain hardening with artificial aging, achieving the highest strength (can exceed 500 MPa) but with lower ductility, suitable for high-strength aerospace fasteners and precision components.

2024 T81 (Solution Heat Treated - Stress Relieved by Stretching - Artificially Aged)

Adds a stretching stress relief process on the basis of T6, balancing high strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking, often used for aerospace load-bearing components.

2024 T851 (Solution Heat Treated - Hot Formed - Artificially Aged)

Combines hot forming with artificial aging processes, offering the best strength and dimensional stability, suitable for high-reliability aerospace parts.

Properties of 2024 Aluminum

1. 2024 is one of the typical high-strength aluminum alloys, with optimal performance in T3, T4, T42, and other tempers, widely used in aerospace structures.

2. Excellent fatigue resistance, making it very suitable for structural components subjected to cyclic loads.

3. Good machinability; in the annealed or partially heat-treated state, it is suitable for machining methods such as turning and drilling.

4. Poor corrosion resistance, especially in humid or corrosive environments, often improved by anodizing/coating.

5. Generally poor weldability, prone to cracking, usually replaced by riveting or mechanical connections.

Processing Properties of 2024 Aluminum

Machinability

In the annealed (O) or T4 temper, 2024 aluminum alloy exhibits good machining performance, allowing for high cutting speeds and excellent surface finishes. However, due to the higher copper content in the alloy, the wear on carbide cutting tools is slightly greater than that of pure aluminum, and chips are more likely to form long, tangled strands. It is recommended to use cutting tools with chip breakers and enhanced cooling lubrication to maintain stable machining quality.

Weldability

The weldability of 2024 aluminum alloy is very poor, and conventional gas welding and arc welding methods are generally not recommended because they are very prone to hot cracking and reduce the corrosion resistance of the weld. If welding is necessary, resistance welding processes such as spot welding, seam welding, or flash butt welding can be considered, but strict process control and post-weld heat treatment are required. In summary, 2024 aluminum alloy is not suitable for applications requiring good weldability.

Formability

During cold forming, sufficient plasticity can only be obtained in the annealed state for processes such as deep drawing, stretching, or bending. The formability in harder tempers such as T3/T4 decreases significantly, making it prone to cracking. For complex or large deformation parts, hot forming can be performed at around 450 °C, followed by solution treatment and aging to balance formability and final strength.

Corrosion Resistance

Unprotected 2024 aluminum alloy has poor corrosion resistance, especially prone to intergranular corrosion and crevice corrosion in humid or saline environments. Methods such as Alclad (aluminum cladding), anodizing, or applying chemical conversion coatings and paints can effectively form a dense protective layer on the alloy matrix, significantly improving its service life in harsh environments.

    2024 vs 7075

    7075 offers higher strength (570–640 MPa in T6) for high-load structures, but 2024 performs better under cyclic loads, making it preferred for fuselage skins and reinforcements. Both have poor weldability, typically joined by riveting or bonding, and need cladding for corrosion resistance.

    2024 vs 6061

    The strength of 2024 (470 MPa tensile strength in T3/T4) is much higher than that of 6061 (310 MPa tensile strength in 6061-T6), but 6061 has better corrosion resistance and weldability, making it suitable for general structures and welded parts. 2024 is more suitable for high-strength, non-welded structures such as aerospace components and fasteners.

    2024 and 2017 are both Al-Cu-Mg alloys with similar properties. 2017 has slightly more copper and better static strength, ideal for medium-temperature parts. 2024 offers better fatigue strength for alternating load conditions. Both have average weldability and corrosion resistance, often enhanced by cladding.
