Chalco disc product types & selection guide
Chalco offers a wide range of metal discs and blanks in various specifications and processing methods, serving industries such as aerospace, automotive, pressure vessels, chemical equipment, and precision machining. We support multiple materials—including aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and stainless steels—along with forging, rolling, and cutting processes to meet diverse demands for strength, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality.
Main disc product types
- Forged Discs: Produced through open-die or closed-die forging, featuring dense microstructure and excellent mechanical properties. Ideal for high-load and critical structural components.
- Rolled Discs: Cut from thick rolled plates, suitable for medium-strength parts requiring dimensional stability and cost-efficient mass production.
- Cut & Turned Discs: Precisely cut—often using high-precision laser or CNC cutting—and machined from bars or plates. Laser cutting offers minimal thermal distortion and clean edges, making these discs ideal for components with tight dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements.
Selection guide
When selecting disc products, we recommend evaluating the specific application conditions, mechanical performance requirements, and downstream processing needs:
- For structural parts requiring high strength, pressure resistance, or fatigue life, forged discs are preferred. Their continuous grain flow and dense structure make them suitable for aerospace, energy, and pressure vessel applications.
- For cost-effective, dimensionally stable structural parts, rolled discs offer good processability and are well-suited for large-scale industrial applications.
- For precision components or parts with strict surface and machining allowance requirements, cut & turned discs help improve machining efficiency and reduce material waste.
- In cases involving corrosive environments or lightweight structures, titanium or specialty alloy discs—such as Gr.5, 6061, and 7050—are recommended.
Chalco also offers value-added services including custom production per drawing, toll processing, heat treatment, and rough turning, helping customers improve assembly efficiency and project timeline control.
Forged disc purchase FAQ
What is the difference between a forged disc and a forged blank?
Forged discs are finished forgings with certain geometric dimensions and structural pretreatment, such as solid discs, discs with holes, discs with bosses, etc.; while forged blanks are unprocessed rough blanks used for subsequent machining or mold structure development.
Why not choose a forged disc instead of one cut from a sheet?
Although plate cutting can obtain a simple geometric disc, its internal structure is irregular and there may be material stress concentration at the cut. It is more prone to fatigue failure under high load, vibration or dynamic use scenarios. Forged discs have coherent grain streamlines, higher structural integrity and better mechanical properties, making them a better choice for key structural parts.
Can you customize forged plates with boss structures according to drawings?
Yes, Chalco supports customized production of center flange forged hubs, including height, diameter, chamfer, keyway and other structural processing. They are widely used in couplings, wind turbine main shafts, flywheel connections and other structures.
What forging methods are supported? How to decide which one to choose?
We support free forging, die forging, partial upsetting and other methods, and select the appropriate process according to product size, structural complexity and batch size. Free forging is recommended for large discs or special-shaped parts, and die forging or combined processing is recommended for small and medium-sized standard parts.
Is it possible to just buy the blank without doing heat treatment or processing?
Of course. Chalco supports full-process customization, and also supports split-process delivery on demand, such as providing only forged blanks, only heat-treated blanks, or finely processed semi-finished parts, etc., to meet the internal processing rhythm and supporting models of different customers.
What are the heat treatment conditions for forged discs?
Common statuses include:
- Aluminum alloy: O, T6, T651, T73, T7451
- Titanium alloy: annealing, solution + aging
- Steel: quenching and tempering, normalizing, quenching + tempering, etc.
We can recommend the most suitable state combination according to the use environment and attach the heat treatment record.
Can forged discs be used directly as seals or high-precision fitting surfaces?
Yes, we can provide ±0.05mm tolerance control, flatness control, roughness matching and hole processing to ensure that the forged disc has high stability in sealing, rotating or mating parts. If you need to assemble directly, please state the structural requirements when inquiring.
